Manu Parekh
Manu Parekh born in 1939 in Gujarat, and is India’s best known contemporary artist. Manu completed a Diploma in Drawing and Painting from the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai, in 1962. With the influence of Rabindranath Tagore and F.N Souza, Manu sought to explore his inner landscape in his works. He is best known for his series on Banaras in which he depicts the colourful and zany “city of light” that never fails to inspire him. His landscapes are known for his intuitive use of colour, bold brushstrokes and prominent lines. He has experimented with colourful abstractions, sexual imagery, and figuration, responding as much to nature as daily life and social issues. He has held several solo shows and participated in a number of group exhibitions in India and abroad and his works are in several important public and private collections. Manu Parekh was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1992, by the government of India.
He lives and works in New Delhi.
